14AugDog & Cat Owners - Listen Up and Listen Hard!!

The day before yesterday I purchased some flea spray for one of my cats. I only got two small squirts on him because he was fiesty and ran away…

He died less than 24 hours later. He was puking neon yellow vomit, he was bleeding from his anal cavity, he was dizzy, his mouth was glued shut from his vomiting up the poison in his stomach, he was burning up and he was so weak he couldn’t meow, or even move up when he peed.

I found him lying on our pool table in a puddle of his own urin trying to meow to me for help but not succeeding.

After the vet notified me of his death and informed me the cause was, in fact, the flea spray, I researched it. This stuff has killed hundreds of dogs and cats. It’s so toxic it can make adults sick and children deathly sick. Just from petting an animal that’s been sprayed with it.

If you own dogs or cats do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy or use Zema flea and tick spray.

Zema has other products such as flea collars which are safe but never EVER use their flea spray!

So far I’ve gotten Ace Hardware in my town to quit carrying the product and I have our local news investigating the companies products. I’m now working on flyers to post around town and trying to contact any and all pet medication sellers I can find to notify them of this stuff.

Like I said don’t use this stuff. It can kill your pet and it’s not pretty. Your animal will suffer horribly before passing away. It killed my cat in LESS than 24 hours from two small squirts on his stomach (the dirrections are to spray the entire cat). DON’T USE IT!

If you have friends with dogs and cats please pass the word along. Post it on forums (copy & paste i don’t care), post it on your websites, livejournals, etc. just help me get this message/information out there! People need to be informed of this and the more the better. Pets can’t protect themselves so please help me out here.

Many thanks to: Silvia, Miriam, Bree, Kate, Christina, Yajaira, Danette, Han, Cheryl, Mis, Sabriena and Deanna Marie for helping to spread the word!

    sweety. I’m so sorry.
I’ll definitly help spread the word. Thankfully I dont think I’ve ever seen that for sale in England. I hope I never do.

Our cat hasen’t had any flees or nothing, so I’m glad about that :S I don’t think that I would put her anywhere near my stuff then….

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 Bronnie14 Aug 2006

OMG.. that absolutely horrible!! How can the company still be selling that stuff?! I don’t think we have that brand here in NZ, but if I ever find it I will inform people.
I’m sorry to hear it affected your cat.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 Heather15 Aug 2006

Oh goodness, that’s horrible. How something with that harsh a chemical got approved for marketing I’ll never understand. The poor pets.

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 Meng15 Aug 2006

I’m sorry to hear what has happened and I hope every thing will be better I know how it feels to lose someone.

To Answer how can a company still be selling that stuff?

Sadly Companys are not the bad guys per-say in the matter of most ( not saying this about this company) but Products must clear a board of experts (normaly products that are for animals (are tested on animals)) They test the product on each type of animal (govern ownable by state/federal law) and then If (NO) or (little) issues arise that are not (serious) they pass the test and approve the product.

In this case Zema is a Nylar® product and there for its classifcation in approval testing rates are 2 out of 5 animals need to be tested and have the product work before its approved.

How To stop a Product form staying on the market?

Thats Simple each state and most Countrys have a Animal Rights Office. You can contact them by / 1 writhing/e-mailing/calling one of the offices and talking to one of them about what they product is doing and they will open a panel to look into your claims Normaly after 72hrs the panel activates and goes looking into the deaths (if the toll is hire then avrage).

Once Again I’m Sorry to hear bout your animal(s) Hope everything will be ok (hugs)

Wow thanks i had just bought that flea stray for my dog. I hadn’t got around to putting it on. I am so glad i read this.

I am so sorry about your cat. I will post this in my journal right now.

Once again i am so sorry about your cat.

I’m so sorry about your cat.

Christina is a friend of mine and when I clicked the link and read your entry my jaw hit the floor - we have a bottle of flea spray that we use on my cat. Luckily it isn’t the same brand, but it’s horrible to think that if we were to pick a different brand our cat might have died.

Thank you for doing what you’re doing.

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 Natalie15 Aug 2006

Aw, your poor cat. I am so sorry. I will keep everyone informed about the flea spray you used.

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 Britney15 Aug 2006

Omg, as a big animal/cat lover, that brought me to tears. It’s so sad that your cat had to suffer. Poor thing. It did not deserve that. I hope my cat never gets fleas because I’d be scared of buying any flea spray.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Arwen15 Aug 2006

I’m really really sorry about your cat. I found this entry through a post at euphoricmb.net

I’ve never heard of that brand, but thanks for spreading awareness. I’m surprised that already hundreds of dogs and cats have died and the company isn’t out of business from lawsuits. Especially here in the USA. I suggest that you sue, sue, sue. See if you can contact other people who’ve used it, and get them to join your petition. This company needs to be pulled once and for all.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 Penny16 Aug 2006

Hey, I’m so sorry about your cat, and thanks for the notification about the flea spray - I don’t think I’ve ever seen it being sold here, but I’ll spread the word anyway, just in case. That company should be sued.

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 Leslie16 Aug 2006

I’m so sorry about your cat! I am having a flea problem with my cat, & I found that the flea sprays work better for the carpets & furniture… but Advantage works wonders ON the cat. I’ll definitely spread the word about that flea spray to my friends with kitties.. how terrible! I’ve been pretty careful about the flea treatments I’ve been using since I am pregnant.. thank you very much for the heads up!

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 sprite17 Aug 2006

That is terrible. This made me cry. I am so sorry for your loss. My cats have never had fleas being indoor kitties, but this is so terrible. I have re-posted a link to this in my journal because everyone I know is a pet lover pretty much. Hang in there.

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Heather17 Aug 2006

Oh my, that is just terrible… It made me cry a bit while I was reading that. I hope that stuff gets discontinued, and quick.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 Shannon17 Aug 2006

I’m so sorry to hear about that. You must be so sad at the moment . I can only imagine what it’s like to lose a pet. Thank you for alerting us all to this - I have a dog, but luckily we don’t use flea sprays or anything on it (we use tablets and things like that). Once again, really sorry for you

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 Pat17 Aug 2006

OMG, I am so sorry about this. Does the maker of the product already know? Then why are they still manufacturing it? I’m glad you informed us about this. It really helps. Thanks and take care!

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Yajaira17 Aug 2006

Oh, Melissa . I’m so sorry about your cat! I’m holding back tears reading this. Thanks for spreading the word about that evil product. I’m just so sorry that it had to take your cat’s life in order for us to find out .

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 Cheryl17 Aug 2006

Oh my god this is horrible! I’m so sorry Mel. I’ll do everything I can to help. This is so terrible. Thank you for posting this.

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 Jeannie18 Aug 2006

Oh my god. That must’ve been a nightmare!! I’d cry my eyes out if my dogs died like that!

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 Krissy18 Aug 2006

I’m so very sorry to hear about your cat. I’ve seen Zema in Petco and for some reason it never appealed to me, I stick with the Hertz products. I can now see why I got a bad feeling from it. Again, I’m very sorry about your loss. It’s extremely unfortunate that it took this to get you to realize how bad this product really was.

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 penny18 Aug 2006

First of all, terrible about your cat. My cat passed away a year ago, so I feel for you.

Can you give the specific name of the product as it appears on the container? The company has many products.

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 Rach18 Aug 2006

I’m so sorry about your cat! Thank you for informing me about that flea spray. I have two cats and a dog myself, and I would hate to use that and not know. If I see that in stores here I will help out and try to get them to stop carrying the product also.

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 Gregory22 Aug 2006

OH MY GOD! Thanks for the heads up and i am so so sorry! I once had to put my dog down from cancer and failing kidneys so I know the pain you must be in. I wish you luck with the grieving process.

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 kimba24 Aug 2006

omg. i am so sorry to hear that this happened to you. thanks so much for speading the word on this.

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 Lexi26 Aug 2006

I’m so sorry about your cat. I’ll be sure to link this up in my blog entry. Hopefully Zema will stop making this product or find ways to fix the problem and test it properly. It’s very irresponsible of them to sell a product without properly testing it. Did you call them informing them of what happened?

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 Scholastica29 Aug 2006

    That sucks

Sorry to hear about that, the company should stop their production. I will link this to my blog in the next update. Thanks for the info.

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 sara18 Sep 2006

my god. i am soooo sorry to hear that. we have 5 cats and a dog, and i will surly tell my mom about this. thank you for informing us, lets hope this stuff gets taken out of the market before it does even more harm than it has already done.

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 Soup19 Sep 2006

): Aww. Luckliy we don’t let our cats outside so they don’t get fleas. I’ll be sure to remember Zema flea spray = no buy.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 xK-la07 Oct 2006

OH MY GOD! That is so horrible! If my 2 dogs died I’d literally die. I hope you can get this out to everyone. I even posted a link to this post on my blog just to spread the awareness of Zema’s products. I hope you will feel better when Zema is closed down and you have finally given your cat justice.

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 Klumsi13 Oct 2006

Oh my gosh. I know this post is older, but I wanted to comment anyways. I’m sorry to hear about your cat. That is just awful. I am so sorry.
But THANK YOU for those words of advice. Thank you thank you thank you! And you are doing excellent by making stores/media more aware of this.
    Good work.
